The mood in this city is lively, but quiet. People are hawking their wares, but you hear very few actual raised voices in the market. The open square is filled with stalls selling all sorts of items and goods, and from where you stand, you can see a pair of heavily-armored patrols walking through the crowd. The town is built around a large dark-stone fortress with blue banners draping from every tower.
The people of the crowd give the black and blue-clad guards space, and give them cautious yet respectful gazes. In the far distance, you can see a trio of wide black towers with a few floating red crystals forming haloes near the top.
Word on the Street:
People tend to be very willing to talk, but are very careful to keep conversations away from politics. The prices seem slightly high, but the citizens seem not to notice the difference from the nearby nations.
Fort Contewel was Baile Patan’s second fortress, built after the alliance with the dwarves. The city slowly grew up around it after the borders (relatively) opened up to foreigners. While little trade comes directly from the Civer Empire across the Grand Ocean, due to both politics as well as risk, much trade comes through the Blackforge Protectorate, Dwarven Kingdoms (a trickle) and the Realms of the Fey (via the ocean).
